THE IMAGE OF A TRAVELER IN THE UDMURT TRADITIONAL CULTURE: STATUS DETERMINATION

Abstract

The article discusses the features of traveler’s clothes, a complex of road things, and the attitude to a traveler in the traditional society. The purpose of this article is to determine the status of a traveler in the Udmurt traditional culture. This purpose is achieved by the analysis of folk sources and traditions. А person is in a "transitional" state, when he is on his way. In this state, actions are aimed at secession from the old society, early inclusion in new and protection in the period of transition. This position determines the peculiarity of the traveler status. Clothing is a main indicator of status in traditional society. A traveler has a special status and clothing. The greatest semantic load is carried by the border elements of the outfit - a hat, a belt, shoes. A set of road things that a traveler takes with him, by which his appearance differs from that of other people, is determined in the article. Attention is paid to the position of a traveler in new society, the attitude to him, his participation in certain rites.
