Abstract

In the Udmurt language the names of plants constitute a little-studied area of lexicology, especially the names of bushes and herbaceous plants which consist of two and more words. This article is devoted to the zoonymic component in the system of plant names in the Udmurt language. The basis of this type of phytonyms is metaphor, i.e. an external similarity of plants and animals or their features that is represented in plant names. The author considers the morphology, semantics, typology and etymology of phytonymic lexicon; identifies four structural types of the multi-compound names of plants by Judith Dmitriyeva's classification; singles out the basic principles of the nomination which are distinctive for phytonyms with a zoonymic component. The names of both wild and cultivated plants that grow not only on the territory of Udmurtia, but also in the adjacent regions of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan, where the Udmurt population also lives, have been considered during the research.
