REFLEXION OF THE LANGUAGE SITUATION AND SOCIO-CULTURAL LIFE IN AZERBAIJANIAN ERGONYMS (THE SOVIET PERIOD)

Abstract

The article discusses the Azerbaijan Republic ergonyms during the Soviet period (taking the city of Baku as an example). It is known that urban ergonyms may reflect the language situation, the social life and aesthetic preferences in a society as well as different linguistic processes. Thus, ergonyms combine economics, linguistics and aesthetics. The article concerns the names of public service establishments in Baku, provides the analysis of the main ways of their nomination; establishes correlation between the nominator’s choice and the language situation, reveals a social portrait of the Soviet period. The author concludes that the existing language situation and social life in Azerbaijan are reflected in the city ergonyms.
