Abstract

The image of V.A. Brehunov, the main character of the novel «Master and Man», reflects the motive of a false life - a central motive of late Tolstoy's works. The purpose of the study is to delimit the lies and truth both in the spiritual life of the character, and in its external expression. To this end, the article analyzes the non-verbal signs and inner monologues of V.A. Brehunov. Non-verbal signals are related to emotional and spiritual life of a character, therefore they become the main identifier of lie / truth. Deployed inner monologues of Brehunov are fixed mainly to the snowstorm situation which refers to the «blizzard text» of Russian literature and defines the miserliness of non-verbal signs. Traditionally, the result of «blizzard» journey is moral self-determination of a hero, which is revealed in the novel «Master and Man» by inner monologues. Thus, a comprehensive analysis of non-verbal signals and inner monologues of the character reveals the superiority of the spiritual over the physical, a landmark in the art world of late L. Tolstoy.
