Abstract

The article is dedicated to the linguistic characteristics of the presentation of news concerning the First Carlist War in Spain (1833-1840) in the Russian press. The publications in the newspaper “Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti” (“Saint-Petersburg News”) were analyzed as a material for the study. The time period of the investigation extends from October, 1833 to July, 1840. A total of 1955 issues of the newspaper were studied. As the analysis of the material showed, the war in Spain was mentioned in 1453 issues. The main trends in the representation of the Carlist movement during the war were determined, and the key lexemes used in relation to Don Carlos and his supporters in different periods of the conflict were identified. The modification of the style of presenting news from Spain in May, 1834 was noted; the connection between this “change of course” with some alterations in the system of international relations in Europe was shown. The article could be relevant not only for the further study of the language of Spanish Carlism and of the models of representation of the Carlist movement in the press of the 19th century, but also for the research in the field of the history of Russian-Spanish relations.
