Abstract

The Orthodox mission during the reign of Catherine II was noticeably different from the previous era, when the activity of the Novokreschenskaya office unfolded. Catherine II closed the Novokreschenskaya office and adjusted the confessional course, which affected the Orthodox mission among the peoples of Russia. Diocesan preachers took the place of the Novokreschenskaya office. The history of the missionary activity of diocesan preachers has not been studied enough. Meanwhile, consideration of this topic helps to better identify the genesis of the Orthodox mission in the synodal period, to understand the peculiarities of the confessional policy of Catherine II. Hieromonk Nikodim (Sezemov) became the first diocesan preacher within the Vyatka and Velikopermsky dioceses. His missionary activity reflected the problems that took place in the history of the Orthodox mission of the second half of the XVIII century in different regions of Russia.
