BIOETHICAL PROBLEMS IN THE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE DYSTOPIAN FICTION OF XXIst CENTURY

Abstract

With the rapid development of the modern technologies the bioethical problem is becoming more topical every year. This tendency is most noticeable in dystopian discourse. This article discusses the features of actualizing the problems of bioethics as well as the moral aspect of the problem of applying biotechnologies on the example of two English-language novels of the 21st century: "Suicide Club" by R. Heng and "Never Let Me Go" by K. Ishiguro. The selected works represent a perspective object to research the features of the transformation of dystopian discourse in the context of the development of medical technologies and the humanity of their use in the modern world. It is shown how scientific achievements are reconsidered in the dystopias of the 21st century, and brought to the point of absurdity, which leads to negative consequences in society. The analysis of the plot of the novels allows us to say that dystopias, in which bioethical problems are crucial, perform the main function of the genre - warning.
